Powerful bicycle engine & mechanical constraints
From our point of view, to get the most out of your bike, the ideal is to have a light weight electric bike.
Far from the 23 to 26kg of the bikes already equipped, the philosophy LIFT-MTB is to have a super light electric bike in order to keep the capacities of your original bike, to be able to pedal easily even without the use of the bike motor so as not to be solely dependent on theelectric assistance mountain bikeand to keep the bike lively and playful in all circumstances.
The LIFT-MTB bike motor kit is certainly powerful with a real torque of about 80 N.m to 110 N.m at the rear wheel. (see calculator table below for more details)
But we don’t want to sell off-road electric mopeds, which are always too heavy to be fun like a bike, and never powerful enough to feel like a bike.
We have obviously tested this type of power and gear, which gives a promising in-between on paper, but from experience is really not satisfactory on the ground.
We have therefore developed an adaptable and removable electric motor system as close as possible to a bicycle, at a reasonable price while remaining light.
This is what best corresponds to the sensations we are looking for on an electric bike, and to the philosophy we have of electric bikes!
A weight of about 15kg for this super light carbon electric bike with LIFT MTB motor
A more powerful kit has many drawbacks
The race for power of the electric motors adaptable for bicycles is a never-ending quest, and for a machine to be fun there are two solutions:
And whether we like it or not, the in-between that we fantasize about on paper, is much less interesting in reality, because it is certain that you will never have enough power to use the detachable electric motor kit as on a motorcycle, (to ride up for example).
You will simply have a very heavy motorized bike, or an under motorized bike…
That’s why this kind of machines is not legion, and why it remains confidential as a type of sales, because tell you well that since the 1970s, all the manufacturers worldwide try to develop products for their customers, and this type of hybrid electric mountain bike (or thermal…) would have invaded the market a long time ago if it was really a fun and playful solution as we would like to believe.
Torque of the electric Mountain Bikes mid drive motor
When we talk about torque in electric Mountain Bikes, many brands talk about figures that are difficult to verify, and unfortunately, in the minds of some, it’s the one with the biggest torque that will have the best kit…
A torque calculation integrates many variables that few sellers put forward by simply putting a vague value (if possible higher than the competitor…) that only a test on a bench could validate objectively (test in progress).
Know that you can easily modify the torque at the wheel or the top speed of your equipped with LIFT-MTB by changing the primary transmission (by changing the primary, secondary, cassette or motor pinion).
Beware of easy shortcuts, it is not because you will have a huge torque that it will necessarily be better in use, the more you increase the torque the more you decrease the length of stroke, the interest is to have for a given engine power the right balance between torque and length of stroke for it to be efficient!
People always want more torque, and they only talk about it because the press and the manufacturers only put it forward.
But an engine tuned to have less torque and more length will also be more efficient and more fun on flat roads, or with a small difference in altitude, it’s like a car that only has 1st gear, you will have more torque, but on a rolling road it will be less efficient than having only 3rd gear for example.
So this value of torque is to be taken with caution, do not seek the maximum torque at all costs, unless you do very steep at low speed.
The bike to electric bike conversion kit LIFT-MTB is one of the only kits on the market where you can modify these torque and extension parameters according to your needs by changing the transmission, here is a theoretical table that allows you to know what torque you will have according to your configuration, and the possible settings to modify these parameters.
